The Today Show Features Corporate Speech Solutions

Jayne Latz; President and CEO of Corporate Speech Solutions

Another exciting week for Corporate Speech Solutions! This past Friday Corporate Speech Solutions’ President and Founder, Jayne Latz, was featured on The Today Show. Jayne was featured on a segment discussing how your voice is perceived by others and how, with training, you can change the way you sound.

Jayne discussed how recent studies have shown that people who have a strong, dynamic voice are perceived to be more confident and successful by others. She also discussed one of the foundations of voice training: proper breathing.

Often, poor vocal quality can be traced back to poor breathing. To really “power up” your voice, you need to make sure you have enough air. When many people take a deep breath, their chest rises as they inhale. This may feel like you’re getting a lot of air, but you’re actually being restricted by the movement of your ribs. Instead, you should feel your lower-ribcage and stomach expand outward. This is called diaphragmatic breathing, because your diaphragm, the muscle that lies below your lungs but above your stomach, flattens when you breathe this way, causing your stomach to expand. To get a good feel for diaphragmatic breathing, lay on your back with your hand on your stomach and take a deep, relaxing breath as though you were about to go to sleep. Stand up and try to continue to breathe this way. Practice speaking aloud and see how your vocal quality changes.
