Three Communication Resolutions You Should Make for 2015!

Speak for SuccessAs we say goodbye to 2014 and welcome a new year, resolve to take your communication skills to the next level and make them your most powerful professional tool! Use these three crucial communication New Year’s resolutions to help you get started:

Master the Pause: Sometimes the key to clear articulate speech isn’t what you’re saying, it’s what you’re not saying. Learning how to insert a well-timed pause into your speech is one of the simplest, and most effective tools for improving the quality of your speech. A pause can emphasize an important point, give your listener time to fully take in your message, and can make your speech clearer and easier to understand. Experiment with different lengths and placements of pauses to find what works best for your communication style.

Learn to Breathe: The quality of your voice can have an enormous impact on how others view you and receive your message. The foundation of a strong, dynamic voice is effective breathing. To get the most air possible with the strongest support, breathe from your abdomen, not your chest. As you take a deep breath, your chest shouldn’t rise; instead, your ribs and stomach should expand outward. This technique will allow you to power your voice and leave an impact on your listener.

Eliminate Fillers: Fillers words and phrases like “um,” “uh,” “like,” “you know,” and “right?” can give the impression that you are unsure of yourself and can seriously reduce the impact of your message. For 2015, resolve to identify in what situations you use these words most often, and cut them out of your vocabulary! Once you’ve learned your personal filler patterns, you can build awareness, anticipate when they will occur, and simply pause instead.

  • Love these Communication Resolutions, especially the Pause. These are simple things people forget to do and can create barriers to communications. I would also add "Look Into Their Eyes". We are so conditioned to multitask and are easily distracted by our devices that within minutes of a conversation we are disconnecting from the personal connection and watering down our interactions. In 2015 resolve to come from behind the screen and look into the eyes of another human being.
