Communicate and Collaborate: Authenticity, Sensitivity, and Inclusivity in the Workplace

A modern workplace requires diversity to achieve your ultimate goal. While creating a diverse workplace, it is important to involve everyone. Regardless of their background, your entire team should feel respected and included.

Fortunately, humanity is breaking stereotypes and moving forward towards equality. However, we still need to do a lot of hard work to promote sensitivity and inclusivity in the workplace. It is important to conduct sensitivity training and teach your employees to respect each other.

In this article, we will talk about the importance of involving everyone. You will learn the methods to develop in the workplace. More importantly, we will talk about strategies for inclusive communication.

Importance of Inclusivity

Building an inclusive workplace is extremely important in the modern world. Diverse workplaces outperform their competitors by understanding their unique needs. Most importantly, it earns you more respect and trust from your employees.

According to the research, and inclusive workplace offers enormous benefits including higher employee retention, innovative approach, and higher revenue growth

Furthermore, the research on company culture highlights that you earn deeper trust with inclusivity. When employees realize that they will be treated equally irrespective of gender, age, race, they are:

  • 6.3 times more likely to feel pride in the job
  • 9.8 times more likely to look forward to going to the office.
  • 5.4 times more likely to stick to the company.

With an inclusive workplace, you don’t only attract talented individuals but also retain your employees. More importantly, you see an increase in annual revenues and better overall performances.

How to Develop Sensitivity at Workplace?

Workplace sensitivity means that everyone in the team should be treated properly. In the fast-changing world, people with different backgrounds are working together. In order to meet goals and thrive, employees should be willing to work well together. They need to share ideas, conduct healthy debates, and make decisions together.

Apart from the company’s growth, it is actually a matter of survival to encourage your team to move forward collectively. Sensitivity and tolerance are extremely important for a workplace.

Having a respectful culture in your company is more important than potential and performance. A workplace with sensitivity or respective culture is more likely to outperform the competition. Here are a few ways through which you can build sensitivity in the workplace.

Set an Example

Likely, you have heard of people complaining about the attitude of HR. The profession requires a huge effort to earn trust and respect.

Sometimes, you may need to make tough decisions for the growth of your organization. However, it is critical to implement those decisions carefully. You need to lead with an example. Be patient and use a soft approach as much as possible.

Training

While working in a diverse workplace, it is important to educate your employees. Teach them the importance of diversity, tolerance, and sensitivity.

Conduct training sessions and show them how lack of sensitivity and tolerance can negatively impact the workplace. The sensitivity with which you deliver information is critical. When your employees understand the facts, they are more likely to expand their minds.

Communicate Clearly

When it comes to managing a team, you need to communicate the rules clearly. Tell everyone to behave with sensitivity. While you communicate, make sure that everyone understands your expectations and follows your lead.

Accountability

Most of the companies that fail to promote positive culture are due to a lack of accountability. Make sure that “high-performing employees” shouldn’t take advantage and show insensitivity.

Everyone must be responsible for their behavior regardless of their role or performance.

Strategies to Develop Inclusive Communication

When you share information in a way that everyone understands perfectly, it is inclusive communication. Your body language is as important as what you say. It makes everyone feel involved and allows them to focus on the job in a better manner. Here are some effective strategies to promote inclusive communication.

Promote Authenticity and Belonging

In the business world, people usually think about the task at hand ignoring the person doing it. Humans like to have a connection. They perform better when they are connected and appreciated.

Acknowledge Unconscious Prejudice

To overcome gender gaps or race concerns, you must recognize unconscious biases. Think about how these biases are influencing your approach towards people. Keep in mind that you are not immune to prejudice. Once you acknowledge your thoughts, you will be able to move forward in the right direction.

Improve Your Speaking and Listening

While communicating with your employees, try to finish your conversation with a question. It will allow them to contribute. While speaking, use less definitive terms as much as possible. Here it is important that you only speak when asked. Male leaders often talk freely regardless of whether someone asked for their input or not. However, women wait until someone requests them to speak.

Make sure that you listen carefully and give importance to other people’s ideas and opinions. Focus on the feelings and values. Do not listen for facts only.

Do Not Presume

Most people have stereotypes in their minds. They carry typical responses and notions for people. However, it limits you from achieving your goals.

Listen to the person and try to build a relationship with them. Acknowledge their strengths and make them feel connected with you.

Concentrate on Results

While communicating with your team members, you should concentrate on their efforts and results. Regardless of their race or gender, you need to inspire them to reach their destination.

No matter who is performing the task, the objective is a success.

Trust and Relationships

Without trust and meaningful relationships, it is hard to meet a collective goal. You need to trust your team that they will do the needful. You must have strong relationships with your team to understand their weaknesses and strengths.

A team built on trust and inclusivity goes a long way.

Adaptability

Every person is unique and has different needs. A team manager should be open to help employees in every manner. Some employees don’t need your input and finish the task while others ask questions. You need to adapt yourself to minimize rework and improve the outcome.
